CARE Adaptive Ski Clinic Held at Holiday Valley

CARE for Children held its annual Adaptive Ski Outing at Holiday Valley Ski Resort on Monday, February 19th with 11 children in attendance.  Each child was paired with one or more volunteer instructors and given expert instruction as part of the Holiday Valley Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program, a chapter of Move United.

Pictured is Sterling Shugars, age 11, along with volunteer Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program instructor Janice Glose.  Sterling is the daughter of Ron and Jeannine Shugars of Bradford.

The Adaptive Ski Outing is one of the therapeutic recreation programs that CARE provides for children of all abilities.  CARE’s recreation programs serve as an extension of traditional therapy that is provided in the school-setting by allowing children to practice skills in a community-based, inclusive environment while promoting social interaction, increased fine and gross motor activity, and the importance of life-long activity and fitness.

The ski outing was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Port Allegany, including lift tickets and lunch, and  Bradford Walmart sponsored snacks for the skiers.  Todd Busses donated transportation to and from Ellicottville, N.Y.  Staff time is funded in part from an annual grant from the United Way of the Bradford Area, Inc.
